Professional underwater photographer Andy Davies, together with the West Wales Dive Company and Cameras Underwater, are pleased to offer accompanied photographic snorkelling trips in the sheltered bays around Skomer Island.
We will be exploring the underwater world of the Skomer Marine Nature Reserve, one of only three in the whole of the UK. From May through to the end of July, the highlight of the excursion will be photographing puffins, razorbills and guillemots whilst they elegantly "fly" underwater.
Our philosophy is to observe wildlife without disturbance. Fortunately, birds in the water or perched on rocks do not perceive a snorkeller to be a human or a threat and we will be able to observe the stunning wildlife at close quarters. Likewise, Atlantic grey seals behave more like inquisitive labradors when you come across them underwater and encounters are likely throughout the season.
Snorkelling in small groups, we will explore the fascinating underwater world just beneath the surface, where a whole new underwater landscape will unfold. In order to enter the world of the puffin, we will have floating decoy puffins attached to us, inviting them to come over and join our raft of "wild birds". |
Our boat, a 7.5m rigid-hull inflatable, will be on hand at all times for our safety and will enable us to access the best locations for underwater visibility and shelter from any wind and current. Whether a complete beginner, enthusiast, aspiring professional or seasoned photographer, Andy provides comprehensive tuition to suit all levels in a relaxed and enjoyable atmosphere.
For the morning session, we meet at 9.45 am on Martins Haven beach where we board Big Bertha for a short ride out to Skomer Island. After an introductory talk on underwater digital photography and a briefing on our Wildlife Watching Code of Conduct, we will spend time in the water discovering this amazing environment. We will return to Martins Haven for 12.30. The afternoon session starts at 1.30 pm and finishes at 4 pm.
Participants should be comfortable in the water and happy to snorkel out of their depth. All locations we choose are not affected by currents and we will have boat cover at all times. |
