Andy is your photographic and marine wildlife guide on Aqua-Firma's Manta Ray Research Experience. We will be joining Dr Andrea Marshall and her team from the Manta Ray & Whale Shark Research Centre at Tofo Beach in their studies of the manta rays found in these coastal waters. Remarkably, she discovered a new giant species in 2008 and the BBC made a documentary about her work in 2009, christening her the "Queen of the Mantas".
Tofo Beach is an world reknowned hot-spot for both manta rays and whale sharks. Each day, we will collect data on their spot patterns and behaviour during two dives. In between these, we will stay out on the water hoping to snorkel with whale sharks.
An additional dive is available in the afternoons or you can relax on some stunning Indian Ocean surf beaches or join us in interpreting the morning's data. You will work with experts who are the world leaders in manta ray research. During the evenings, there will be a variety of talks on the team's work, coral reef ecology and whale sharks.

Accommodation in South Africa & Mozambique
The start and finish of this experience is Johannesburg and the night in the hotel is included on the first and last night's as well as airport transfers. Our accommodation in Mozambique is in three rustic but adequate cabanas with self-catering facilities. Two of these have two twin/double rooms and the third has three twin/double rooms. Breakfasts are included at the cabana and we can explore local options for evening meals.
Diving conditions
Sea temperatures vary from 25oC to 27oC in April so a 3mm wetsuit should be adequate with an additional rash vest if you feel the cold. |
