Kruger National Park and Blyde River Canyon Safari

Andy is your photographic and wildlife guide on Aqua-Firma's safari in the central southern part of the Kruger National Park. Staying at an exclusive 5 star lodge, this is a 10,000 hectare private concession with a maximum of 24 lodge guests. Andy will accompany the first 9 to book on daily safaris in an open sided 4WD. In addition to providing one-to-one assistance with all aspects of your camera settings and composition during the game drives, he will also provide evening image reviews and workshops.

Kruger is the richest of all the reserves in the whole of Africa having a total of 147 species of mammal with the world's largest population of rhino. These will provide great opportunities to capture their portraits in the bush. Elephants are even more abundant, so these animals are an ideal subject both at a herd level and for coming in closer to capture abstract images of their deeply weathered skin patterns.

Lions are not as easy to spot as on the grasslands of the Serengeti in the mixed grassland and bush of the Kruger but there is a good chance of seeing them against a variety of backdrops. Other big cats include leopards, which are often most often seen in trees, and on the 2012 safari, we had very close encounters with a pair of cheetahs as well as a beautiful serval cat. We also saw spotted hyena, hippo and buffalo together with numerous impala, giraffe, waterbuck, zebra and wildebeest.

Kruger is also exceptional for its variety of birds having over 500 species. Lilac breasted rollers and birds of prey are regularly seen and we hope to see the rare and very large ground hornbill with its dark feathers and bright red "gulas". Other subjects of interest include chameleons as well as stunning landscapes.

En route to the Kruger from Johannesburg, we will take the Panorama Route and stop one night in Hazeyview. This drive takes in some of East Africa's most dramatic landscapes found at Blyde River Canyon, the Tree Rondavels, Bourke's Luck Potholes and God's Window.

This experience can be extended by Aqua-Firma who can build a tailor-made itinerary for you elsewhere in South Africa. Andy will also be teaching underwater photography immediately before the safari on the Mozambique Manta Ray Research Experience.
