Lynne Cooper - Skomer May 2014

Andy met myself, Chris, Laura and Andrea at the top of Martins Haven beach. Even before we landed on Skomer excitement was mounting, the rain forgotten, as seals and a porpoise were spotted swimming close to the boat. The day had started wet and dismal but despite the weather we were all looking forward to the workshop led by Andy.

On landing, a steep climb up steps followed before we made our way to the visitor centre. Once in the dry we introduced ourselves to each other and Andy commenced the workshop. We were a mixed bunch ranging from complete novice to keen amateur. The talk on our camera settings was given in a very clear, easy to understand way and we all learned something new I am sure.In my case holding the camera up to my left eye enabling me to keep my right eye open to scan for activity that would otherwise be missed. Very necessary when photographing wildlife.

The introduction and theory done we set off to put this into practice. The rain had stopped and the sun was now shining in a blue sky. Puffins greeted us as we reached the Wick, what a wonderful sight. Cameras to the ready, with Andy's guidance on how to achieve the best shot, we started. Andy was very vigilant, helping us all in turn with advice and suggestions to improve our shots. Dinner was eaten quickly and we then turned our attention to photographing birds in flight. Gosh some birds fly so fast and this is, I realize, an area I need more practice in. An excellent reason to visit Skomer again!

Time was just whizzing by and knowing we had to catch the ferry back to Martins Haven, we made our way to the bay where the seals were. These were to be our next subjects, and again Andy offered lots of advice and guidance in capturing good shots. As well as the puffins and seals there were a great number of different sea birds, and hundreds of rabbits to be seen.

All too soon we made our way to the ferry and back to the mainland. From Martins Haven we all made our way to the Clockhouse Cafe in Marloes for refreshments and a recap from Andy on the day. We had a question and answer session before making our way back to our various accommodation.

A wonderful day that I want to repeat with excellent company and tuition.

Well done Andy.
